We are pleased to share research funded by PANDAS Network donors and conducted by neuroscientist Dr. Irene Pedersen and her team at The Scintillon Institute. Dr. Pedersen specializes in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and central nervous system disorders.

This small proof-of-concept study examined how blood (sera) from three PANDAS patients, collected during an acute episodes, affects neuronal function in the brain. The findings offer a powerful way to identify areas of damage and potential treatment pathways for patients.

Stem Cell Research, Using Sera From Three PANDAS Children

Dr. Irene Pedersen and her team developed a 3D stem-cell model of the human blood-brain barrier (neurovascular unit) to study PANDAS/PANS.

Using this model, her team investigated what factors among PANDAS patients increase blood-vessel leakiness, contributing to neuroinflammation and revealing potential treatment pathways.

Mental Health Support for Caregivers

Navigating PANDAS can feel overwhelming and isolating. Mental health professional Sara Wener will join our monthly support groups to create a trauma-informed space where caregivers can find connection, validation, and practical tools for managing stress, uncertainty, and caregiver exhaustion.

As a parent who has personally navigated PANDAS, Sara understands the emotional toll of this journey firsthand. Her own experience has shaped her professional path and deepened her commitment to supporting caregivers in this community.

This is a supportive, psychoeducational, community-based offering and is not psychotherapy or clinical treatment.

Sara Wener is a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT #156614) and Registered Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC #20124), practicing under supervision at One Life Counseling Center.
